Pea mystery

Hi, I've sown peas twice now and only one half has popped through, when I checked the other half I could find no peas both times! The earth hasn't been touched so it's not mice or birds.I have a lot of red ants nests on my plot and I know this sounds daft but could it be them?

Mice probably - very common. They can be quite invisible when doing it  ;)
Best to sow them inside in pots to start off, so that you can monitor and protect them, and then transplant later.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Or use an old bit of plastic gutter.

I think the technique was on Gardeners' World last Friday. It is an old Geoff Hamilton trick. About 2.5 ft of plastic gutter filled with MPC. Zig-zag the peas and germinate indoors.

When they look ready to go out, wet it well and with a bit of practice it is possible to slip the whole lot into a ready made groove in the planting position. Gutter bits with peas at the front, the ends are just duct tape, leaving a small hole at the bottom for drainage.

yes, I agree with the tips already here, but I got the gutter tip from Sarah Raven, mice are tiny and sneaky, or, "One for the Rook one for the crow, one to rot, one to grow."
