Flowering Cherry producing pods for the first time in 35 years??

I have a flowering cherry tree in my garden and for the first time in 35 years it is producing odd shaped pods along side the normal cherries. I have a feeling these might be misshaped cherries, any ideas anyone

Unfortunately, those are not pods but malformed fruits and are caused by a disease called 'Pocket plum'. See here:

I suspect your tree may actually be a
cherry plum
.

Thank you so much for a speedy reply, I will start removing the infected branches.
