Ideas to plug this gap

SuesynSuesyn Posts: 664

I have this gap in a very shady spot next to the pergola. Ideally I would like a dome shaped evergreen which would be about 2/3 ft tall (60/90cm), something like a box ball but which would grow in that shape without too much pruning. I was thinking a hebe would be a possibility but can anyone suggest a suitable variety.
The tall spikey plant is Iris siberica and the one nearest the camera is knautia. The other stuff is either primroses or daffodil foliage.
Any ideas?

Not often seen in gardens, but Butcher's Broom, Ruscus aculeatus, might be happy in a spot like that.  Low-growing evergreen foliage, insignificant flowers in summer followed by red berries.  I've seen it growing wild in patchy woodland.

If you need a shrub that can be pruned into a dome shape in semi shade, Ilex Crenata might do well there. But they will need some pruning into shape. Hebes won’t do well because it’s too shady there.

Bit too shady for a Hebe.
Berberis is a possibility, some nice smaller varieties available.
How can you lie there and think of England

Thanks for your responses, I might have guessed a hebe would be too easy! More research needed  before I make the decision. It might boil down to what I can get from the local garden centre.
