We are both on GiffGaff PAYG
    Android 4.2.2.
That's such an old version of Android...always worry if the manufacturer issues monthly security updates for those phones. The current version is 10.0, wish all phone makers would pull their finger and update, 4 was out nearly six years ago.

But anyway, hope she can get some WiFi access via the neighbours, the usage would be negligible.

My neighbours and I use each other's broadband if one of us has problems. If she is on v good terms with them, you can also by a signal bouncer that strengthens the signal for your mum. I have one that bounces my router signal to my shed. It works brilliantly. I got a secondhand one like this off Ebay for a tenner.

I wonder if have her own wifi at home might be useful as she ages, for supermarket deliveries and things. There are some very cheap, low use packages out there.

The phones were bought 4 years ago at a discount as the model was getting on a bit then!
Been perfectly fine as phones and no problems so no need to get a new phone which does pretty much the same thing!
It is only now that they show their age!!!
Mum is not tech savvy and the thought of WiFi in her home is just too much for her at her age.
Anyway I have some ideas now to work with!

If the neighbours don't play ball there might be a BT WiFi hotspot you can sign her up to.

I had a resort to it at an AirBnB I stayed at recently, it did take a while and was a PITA to set up.

Get a pay as you go MIFI device. It creates a local wireless network and connects to the internet through a data plan, so you just join the Wi-Fi network from your phone or laptop and the rest is seamless. Something like this:

A MIFI device is useless without a decent 4G signal which is the case here - only enough signal for voice and text.

Hotspots should have been such a good idea when the started. They've never worked well for me.
