  • So removed the turf after much consultation and Charles Dowding wouldn't share his views but tagged me his cult followers instead.  He earns his living from extolling the virtues of no dig 6 books lots of articles YouTube ect. I was going his way was going to get the cardboard out and do it the Charles way but then changed my mind I don't run with fashion and took advice from old school gardeners and decided that perennial garden might not work well on top of turf as he just grows annuals with small root systems but I'm still not certain just didn't want to run with the metropolitan coffee set with their raised beds and evangelical regard for veg that veg growing is a fad like decking or any number of garden fads that come along every few years. So I said no! to Charles no to piet ouldof and his naturalised planting and their followers. I'm going to do it my way because you have to learn yourself about it and learn from your mistakes.

You seem mighty confused about a lot of things! Charles is a highly successful market gardener, excellent author and very engaging. I've often chatted to him on his YouTube channel. The system of no dig he uses is for market gardening - growing veg.

Did you watch the Richard Perkins video? It's no fad that is one hell of a successful business Richard has there.

The confusion seems to stem from you thinking no dig was a method of avoiding the work in a traditional ornamental garden. Good luck with that!

  • I found the problem with asking a question is that you don't seem to get the reply you were expecting. I find a lot of people are on a different planet so instead of providing a coherant answer they go off on to subjects that are close to their hearts and work them into their answers so you get very weird answers not usually anything to do with your original question.

Probably best then not to start off confusing the issue by mentioning no dig and Charles Dowding, when anyone who knows him or his methods will assume you are talking about growing veg.

You know, it might make people think that is what you were actually talking about, when clearly it wasn't, you were just confused and ought to have made a clear post about prepping for what you actually wanted to do.

Verbose attacks on a well known Gardener don't really help your case either.

It all took a strange turn @GemmaJF let's call the case closed and on the way to gardening bliss 😉

  • If no dig is so beneficial why for hundreds of years have farmers plowed their fields? Why don't they just grass them over lay cardboard on top and add well rotted compost.

If you knew the answer you wanted already, why did you ask the question?

I've not seen a plough used on a field in East Anglia since the 1970's. Arable farmers around here adopted low till disc harrows and direct sow decades ago.

Plenty of farmers are adopting regenerative no till techniques, the results speak for themselves.

    How rude.
Ploughing a field to grow crops is just a bit different to growing ornamental beds.
I'm struggling to understand what the OP is trying to do, and I can't get a coherent question so I can't give a reply he 'wants to hear'. The forum has been littered with that type of query over the years

    I'm off as well @GemmaJF
