Planting.....

Mary370Mary370 Posts: 2,003
Hi, I'm finally getting around to doing my large front garden.  Last year we got a machine in to skim off the top and 10 ton of decent topsoil, unfortunately life got in the way and it was just left.  I got it strimmed on Friday and have a lad help me dig it.  It is fairly well compacted in places, quite thick and sticky and slow to drain. Problem is I bought a ot of pyracantha for a hedge last year and I really need to get it in the ground.......would it be ok to mix in lots of mpc and plant the hedge?

I dont think they're particularly particular. I shoved one in unimproved clay with a sprinkle of slow release fertiliser and it's doing fine.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Great, I was hoping someone would say they'll be fine.  Thanks @B3

Tough plants, but as they would have been better planted in the autumn, make sure to water regularly in warm or dry spells.  Avoid using too much MPC.  It doesn’t have much nutrients and dries out quickly.  Better to use mostly soil (even clay) mixed with some compost or well rotted manure.

I still have some home made compost left, will use it.  Thanks @KeenOnGreen
