It looks like bacterial canker, Shothole disease. Not likely to kill your shrub, but visually unsightly. The problem is they are spread through damp humid conditions. Including rain. You can prune out the unsightly damaged leaves and branches when there has been no rain or wet sitting on the leaves and branches. Your shrub will eventually improve over the year.
Unfortunately, it seems to be getting worse as the weather has improved. This dry spell doesn't seem to have helped. Very large hedge 10ft high X 10ft wide by 40 yards - so don't want to lose it. Thanks for the response.
I thought the same. They will drop some leaves at this time of year and into May. If you look at the height of a plant in general it will need a root run of two thirds it's size to do well.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
