Water butt position, possibly moving

Just wondering if any body has ever moved there water butt away from downpipe? I have two and I was thinking about moving them next to my shed instead of the back door of the house. I suppose you could attach some hose to the diverter but not sure if that would work or if it would look a bit naff. Cheers

Yes.  Here’s some examples of how they don’t need to be directly connected to the drainpipe. We always have an overflow pipe, which either feeds into a drain or a planting bed.

  • Thanks for info. I don’t think that wood work on my setup. Ideally the water butts will be move to the shed where there is no drainpipe

We have two water butts which are across the patio from the downpipe. We have a hose that goes down from the diverter, under the patio area and then back up to fill the water butt. You need to be very careful to get the levels right so that the diverter is above or at the fill point of the water butt but below the lid level or the water butt will overflow.
  • Is it normal garden hose on the diverter to the water butts. Do you have any pictures?

It's not normal garden hose that we use. The size depends on the size of the outlet from the diverter - our house water butt has a larger diameter pipe than the one by the garage. We sourced it from pond supplies places. It's called flexible water butt connection pipe or ribbed aquatic hose.

We have a posh diverter for the house downpipe with two levels of filter so that the pipe doesn't block up where it is inaccessible under the patio but just an ordinary diverter for the garage one (which has blocked up once with a large snail inside and needed back flushing with a normal hosepipe to clear it).

Pictures below (they seem to have loaded in rather a random order - sorry!):

  • Wow, how many water butts etc do you have, I love it. Yes I’ve seen that type of hose before. I think dad has some left over from his pond. I’ll have a look and see if it will work for me

I have three water butts - the photos only show two of them but I was trying to show all the bits of the setup hence so many photos. One takes all the water from the main house roof which can be a lot of water all at once in heavy rain so needs a big diameter pipe! The other one in the pictures takes the water from the garage roof and then I have a smaller one which just takes water from the kitchen extension. I'm very pleased with them but still manage to use all the water from all of them in dry spells.
  • Thanks singing gardener I’ve been looking into it and found a product looks like it will do the job - I hope. I will get it and see if it works will let you know
