Conifer tree thoughts?

Hi guys,

My tree had an offshoot/ branch that had a break in it after the strong wind earlier this year. The crack got worse and it's now broken off. I've pulled it away and its left and awful brown patch where the other branches had no light behind it.

Question is what can be done now? Will the brown regrow at all? If no what would you do? Cut the branches up higher to get rid of the dead patch? Always a shame to fell a tree.

What do you guys think?

HELP!

  • I haven't got many other options I guess but do you think it will look odd as its probably over a 1/3 that needs removing. The top of the brown patch is probably 11ft off the ground?

Do you think if the crown is lifted I could grow grass under? could level ground & add a tree bench>

Is it a thuja?  I’ve heard that, unlike some evergreens, they will regrowth from brown wood. I’ve no experience of it myself but it might be as well not to rush into action ...

  • I thought It may be a Thuja plicata but also looks very similar to some cypress?

I heard the same thing about Thuja being able to regenerate unlike most other species in the family.

Or you could put in a suitably sized seated arbour and use that ideally shaped recess as-is, working with what nature has given you. :)

    That’s a lovely idea @BobTheGardener ... an arched arbour ... perfect.
