Is my rambling rector dead?

Still no leaves on my rambling rector and it’s early May - it’s been amazing the past 4 years so not sure if it’s died or having an ‘off year’! Should I leave it alone, cut it back or give up and dig it up? I’m not sure how to check if it’s died off. Any advice very welcome.

Scrape a little bark off with your fingernail in various places near the main stem. If it's green underneath, it's alive. If it's brown,it's dead. They're pretty hard to kill. It took me ages to do for mine. But it does seem quite late for no leaves at all.

Sorry, but rambling rector always makes me think of lengthy and incomprehensible sermons.

When I was battling it, rambling rectum came more easily to mind @josusa47😉

My poor old mum suffers from that.

Thx for the tip - It looks like it’s  died, all cut back now. Will see if anything happens next year before finally digging it up.

Leave a stump. If it's going to produce shoots, they'll come off that, not off any dead branches
