Roots everywhere!

Hi everyone!
What are my options for removing these roots? Will a rotivator cut through them or do I need to get an axe or something?
They come from 2-3 trees growing in the garden - as you can see, I uncovered them when I removed all the stones and pulled back the weed membrane.
Ideally looking to grow a lawn and plant some beds!
Thanks!
Harry

Do you also intend to get rid of the trees?f you get rid of their roots, they will die.
    In London. Keen but lazy.
  • Thank you - No, I don’t think so. Certainly not for the moment. I have actually removed 2 already and their roots are still pretty firmly entrenched.

If you want to lay a lawn, you are best off turfing on top of the roots, after leveling the area with topsoil (no more than is needed to come level with the roots). So you would need an edge restraint of some type, because your build-up including turf will be 50-100mm at the edge. I think the exposed fine tree roots are best covered back over to stop them drying out, maybe you could pull back the sheet and keep it watered.

  • Thanks! Maybe I am over complicating this, and I can just put topsoil down and then put seed down
I don’t know why the orientation does that.. tried uploading a few times now.
