Magnolia in a pot

Hello,

We bought this magnolia from B&Q about two years ago. It doesn't have the best shape and has not grown much. Does any one have any tips for improving the shape of it/pruning magnolias in general. In addition as it is in a pot how often should we refrest the compost and/or feed (and if feeding, what feed?). I would like to not that the compost has contracted from sides of the pots.

I have a magnolia in a pot but I don’t know which type it is. It’s in a shady area and I re potted it with new compost a few months ago into a pot about 2 sizes bigger than the one it was in. I am feeding it liquid seaweed once a week while watering it with a watering can. Due to the lockdown the liquid seaweed was all I could get in the supermarket but it seems to have done a great job and it’s looking better than ever! And very healthy!
I used to have it in full sun but it never looked as good  as it does now.
Hope that’s of some help to you!

Magnolias are trees, and trees in pots is never as ideal as putting them in the ground.

If you can, I would say put it in the ground.  If not, it really wants to be in a much bigger pot.  They don’t like root disturbance, so don’t stint on pot size now, thinking that you can pot it up again in the near future.
