Hi. This clematis is showing signs of something that doesn’t look good? Nice and healthy further up. It’s a group 3 if that helps any? Thanks.

If so, it's probably very, very thirsty. Group 3s should be cut right back at the end of winter/early spring, and they do enjoy plenty of water. A mulch also helps, especially if they haven't been planted more deeply.
If planting next to trees, they need to be well away from the trunk.

I must admit a Clematis grows better up a well developed shrub than a mature tree as it’s competing with nutrient and water with the tree. With planting it to grow up a shrub you can do this 3 to 4 foot away from the shrub due to the width of the shrubs growth
