Acer problem.

My acer isnt responding to well to being planted, the leaves seem to be drying out. Its sitting along a north facing fence but as the garden is so big and open it gets as much sun as the rest of the garden. Any ideas what to do with it.

Assuming a Japanese acer, they prefer some shade but, probably more important, protection from wind and don't like being planted in open areas for that reason.  They like to be planted where they get some shelter from other trees and shrubs, preferably in a west-facing position so that they don't get any early morning sun.
If you can find somewhere like that it will be a lot happier.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Think i will just pot it until i get the rest of the garden  ready as the bit I've done up the now gets sun all day
  • Seems as though I have the same problem.  I planted an Osakasuzuki (one or two words?) about two years ago after seeing Monty enthusing about that variety but since planting it has slowly wilted (new leaf in spring) and lost its leaves.  The spindly branches look completely dead.  However, there are some new leaf shoots now appearing at, or just below, the graft splice.  It seems a strange time of year for this to happen!  It's in a fairly sheltered position although facing east.  Any thoughts on what I should do, eg pot it up for some TLC over winter?

If shoots are appearing from below the graft, they'll not be Osakazuki, but the rootstock.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
