Fatsia Disaster - something eating the new leaves

Something is eating the new leaves on my Fatsia but I can't find any culprit.  They go brown and brittle and die off.   Could it be a deficiency in the soil or is there likely to be a little vandal creeping about.  Either way, has any body got any ideas?

They often come out of winter looking a bit battered. If you do a search there are quite a few threads on here about them.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
