Climbing rose problems.

Why does my climbing rose look poorly?
Its been in just over a year, had one flower on the whole thing last year near the bottom. It looks quite ill.  Its on a shaded garage wall that has sun for maybe only 2 hours a day.

Must stop buying more plants, repeat, must stop buying....

     I believe roses need a minimum of 6 hours of sun a day, have you got a sunnier spot you could plant it in?

    No, unfortunately, thats the only place a climber can go.

    I would chose a clematis that loves shade (not just tolerates it).

    That’s a very weird pattern of leaf damage too. Have you been spraying pesticide anywhere near, or perhaps over-fertilising it in an attempt to get it to flower? I agree, not ideal situation for a rose. There are some that tolerate shade, but only 2 hours of sun is really pushing it!

    Sorry to hijack the thread a little.. @Fire which clematis would you recommend for a very shady wall that has a powerful scent?

    @celcius_kkw Taylors recommend these four which they list as "shade loving" not just tolerant. And they are scented. Two are small and two can be huge. So the decision with this selection would be based on potential size. The Montanas are no-prune, the other two are late prune.

    @Fire that’s great I’ll take a look at them.. I intend to grow them in large pots (55x55cm) - on a north facing wall that gets really no direct sunlight at all due to the configuration of the wall.

    Maybe run past your situation past Thornycroft / Taylors. They will be able to inform you.
