Is my Acer dead after cutting the roots?

I used to have a very healthy and happy Acer in a big pot. Around 8 months ago, I needed to replace the pot as it was falling apart. When doing this, I realised the roots had grown down into the patio so i had to cut several thick roots. I reported the plant in a new pot of the same size . Since then, all the leaves fell off and the end of the branches have turned white. Can I save it or is it dead?

Unfortunately, I think that he is dead. But scratch the bark and see if he is green under bark, for any case.
My acer suddenly died after five years. He just dried, despite mild winter.
