problem solving

I know the first thing you folks would like would be a picture, dont have anyway of doing that, I re-potted my herbs, removed the old compost and there was a "thing" in one of the pots I have never seen the like before, about an inch long white, like a very small pangolin, no obvious head, like a row of scales, gave me the willies, any ideas?

Sounds like a beetle pupa of some sort.

Agree with @GemmaJF and would guess a vine weevil pupa which look like this:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

No, we ve had vine weevils its was nothing like them, this was straight as a dye, pure white, as opposed to the cream weevils, with very distinct overlapping scale like things, that stuck upwards.

Do you feed live mealworms to birds at all? Sounds a bit like a mealworm pupa, though they have definite head and tail end to them.

Hi Gemma, no, we dont it probably my rubbish description, it wasnt scaley like a pangolin or woodlice, the "spines" almost stood upright like a mini dinosaur, pure white, slightly narrower at one end, no "head", alien life form perhaps, I should have taken a pic with the camera, at some point (who knows) my daughter could have posted a pic
