Heathers and other acid loving plants

I have a plot 14ft x 4ft and I want to make it a heather garden, full of colour.  Any ideas on how many plants I would need and what varieties would give some colour all year around, would be very much appreciated.

    Hi Rik56, Thanks for answering.  The soil is neutral but I do have several bags of peat which I am about to dig in.  It is free draining.

    Most of them are fine in neutral soil, as long as you have plenty of organic matter in there.
    Some are fine in alkaline soil - many of the Ericas, especially the winter ones.
    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
