Making a rockery

cc87cc87 Posts: 17
Day 1 of this small project - plenty of hard work remains - no rush though.
Plan is to remove remaining turf, dig in compost, border with stone, few bigger stones within, plant some alpines/heather/ferns/ground plants... then mulch with small stone.
Filter drain at the bottom, so remove old stone and replace.
Any tips on plants/design would be much appreciated.

You need very large, mainly flattish, rocks, and they need to be put in so that the back [ie the bit going into the ground] is lower than the front. They should be in horizontal [roughly] lines too.
    That enables good drainage.
Conifers don't work in a rockery I'm afraid.

Or did you mean you're just doing a bed with rocks in it?  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks for that Fairygirl.  I'll look out for that when locating/placing stone.
Bed with rocks it is then  :) they were transplanted at the start of the year, so I'll keep them in that location.
