Advice on apple tree issue.

Hi guys,

I have moved into a house with two well established apple trees in my garden and they have a few issues that I’d like some help with if possible.

On both trees, bark is peeling off the trunks. I can see that someone has been cutting off large branches in the past and I wanted to know if this could have led to the bark peeling.

There are also large growths on both trees and one of them looks to have a serious problem at ground level and below. It is rotting down near the roots. This being said, both trees seem to be blossoming well.

I have attached some photos and any help with what is causing these problems or what I can do to fix them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Stewart

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news stewart but your trees don’t have long to go.

The bark of a tree is where all the life giving activity goes on. The bark is like the blood system and the digestive system all in one. The woody part of the trunk is like the bones of the tree, it holds it up to the sun, but doesn’t contribute to its feeding and wellbeing.

Damage to the bark, removal of the bark and serious infection in the bark are much more serious. They prevent the tree from obtaining food and water.

Enjoy the trees as they are, but they are beyond rescue.

Thanks for your reply. That’s what I feared, it’s just a shame that previous bad management has led to this.
