Aacacia dealbata

I have planted an acacia dealbata in a sheltered sunny part of my garden . The problem is that it is a straight stem 8 foot high whereas I would like it 6 foot high and bushy. How and when should I prune it? I assume now would be ok in Dorset as we will have had our last frost

Yes, you should be fine to prune them at this time of year. If you are trying to keep it at 6 ft tall, you will be doing a lot of pruning in years to come. They want to grow a lot more than that.
