Planting a Pear tree

I really want to plant a pear tree. Years ago my Wife's grandad had a great one in his garden!

I've looked online at websites etc... But i'm not really getting the answers i need. I dont mind spend a few quid on a tree.

What i want is the following:

* A Tree i can strap to a post to grow verticle for asthetics on my large front lawn
* What type/size of pear tree i should be search for to buy and ideally from where
* An idea on to maintain/look after it.

Thanks to any advice you guys can give.

We had the same impulse as you a couple of years ago, an innocent visit to the garden centre saw us return home with a pear tree!

We purchased a patio tree, so hopefully it shouldn't grow too big. Other than a bit of pruning we haven't done anything special and it hasn't died yet - in my garden that's considered a success!

The one thing I learnt (afterwards) is that it takes some years to get the first fruits - maybe you already know that, but in case you didn't I think if I had known before, we would have brought a more mature tree so we could enjoy it sooner.
