yellowing leaves on California poppies

I sowed these in a light gravelly soil with good drainage and gravel on the top.  I've recently thinned them and will thin further.  But I have very pale foliage verging on the yellowing. Any idea what I might be doing wrong?  Is it the watering regime maybe? Thanks

You only need a handful of plants to fill that pot. You have way too many. They don’t like being transplanted, so you may lose any that you try to remove.

Great, it's not a problem to lose the ones that I thin out, am happy to do that if it gives them some room.   Any idea how much space to leave?  I ddid intend to thin further but obviously that's the way to go.  do you reckon 10 plants for that pot?
    thanks
