    Hello Lorraine,
what shape roughly is the border as that could affect the suggestions we make e.g. for a deep border we could suggest a mix of sizes but maybe not for a long narrow one.
    Also any favourite colours, seasons?

  • hi it’s a large triangle with the point leading down to the patio which is the start of the stepped pathway up to my large lawn .the left of the triangle runs along the stepped pathway. I hoping to bark it eventually so maintenance free

A mix of evergreen and deciduous would give a good display and additional seasonal interest.
Ceratostigma willmottianum and hardy Fuchsias (Mrs Popple is a nice small one) are good small shrubs which give lots of flower power for their size. Hypericum Hidcote is another good low height flowerer and has black berries after.
Cornus Elegantissima is very elegant - lovely variegated foliage and colourful winter stems
Good evergreen doers would include Choisya ternata Aztec Pearl or Sundance, Sarcococca confusa would provide winter scent near your paths and can be clipped to manage the size - from memory C.hookeriana may be smaller.
The Pittospernums are attractive shrubs, flowers are tiny but scented. Golf ball is a nice minty green, Silver Queen is variegated.
Hebe rakaiensis naturally forms a nice rounded shape and has white Sumer flowers
Cistus corbariensis has long lasting reddish buds which open into bright white flowers
