Yikes! If you extend you won't have much left and your overlook problem would be worse as growing something tall round the edges will make your garden and extension very dark. It appears that you have little ones so you need to think longer term really.
Yes, that's one of the key problems we have - the garden is north facing so the living room (at the back of the house leading on to the garden) gets no sunlight and is cold all year round. So, we're working with an architect to plan an extension that will hopefully bring in some natural light. But as you say, we don't want to ruin all of that with inappropriate planting that actually blocks the light out. What a conundrum.
And yes, 2 kids under 3 years old. Hence often neglecting the watering. I guess we ideally need something that's pretty low maintenance! Does that rule out bamboo altogether?
I suspect that your cherry trees will be on dwarfing rootstocks in which case you don't need to worry. They will grow to about 3.5m max. I suspect the builders like them as they grow very quickly and are visually appealing.

Ahh, that would be great. Thanks, I hadn't thought of that. Do you know if there is any way to tell if they are dwarf versions? The one on the right is already about 3.5 metres and I guess it's less than 10 years old.
It's worth remembering that although people in the houses/flats can see your windows, they won't be able to see inside very far, if at all (can you see into their rooms from yours?) Try it sometime when you're walking down the street - you can't really see people in their houses unless they're right by the window, or their window is right on the street. Mostly you can just see the glow of the TV. If it still bothers you, think about net/voile curtains or venetian blinds (or whatever the modern equivalent is).
The ultimate size of the trees will depend on the variety and what rootstock they are on. Maybe ask the developer. They might give you more privacy when they're fully grown, but anything that blocks the view will also block the light to some extent.
