New buxus box plants going brown!

hi there,
I wonder if anyone could offer any advice please, we planted lots of box hedging from rootballs about 4 weeks ago, some plants seem great and healthy, and others are going brown and crispy. They all came from the same supplier and have had the same amount of watering (everyday apart from rainy days). The ones that are going the most brown are one a south facing wall and get quite warm. Although in other runs of the planting random plants have brown crispy leaves whilst other adjacent plants have wonderful new growth!

Ive read a bit about box blight, but seems too soon to be this having just been planted? Is there anything we can do to recitify this??

help please from novice gardeners who have just spent a lot of money on box plants!!😞

Welcome to the forum @eilidhmca plants really don't care how much you spent on them. And the ones planted against the house are very close to the wall...how are they meant to grow there? If you brought them forward they'd get more rain water and they'd have space to spread. Can you see any webs inside as they may have fallen victims to Box caterpillar which is a horrible plight on them. If you're not in the South East currently you don't have to worry about them gorging on your plants...the browning of the great tips could also be from low night temperatures. How did you prepare the ground when planting? Did they get fertilised?

Hi thank you very much for such quick responses. The ground was well fertilised prior to planting, new compost throughout all beds, lots of bone meal and manure also mixed in, and they were watered initially with buxus fertiliser which dissolved.

Theres no no sign of any caterpillars or webs in the plants.

In terms of how close they were planting together, we followed the guidelines of 5-7 we meter and ended up with 7. They are close to the wall but though that there’s plenty of space to grow in the front and maybe naively thought that box was regularly planted against houses!
  • How are you watering them? They don't like getting water on their leaves especially in full sun, which would make sense if it's the south facing ones. Try and water the soil if you can.

My husband normally water in the evenings, but I do think waters a lot of the leaves. We’ll water the soil a lot more and see if there’s improvement.

    thank you for the help
