Advice on soil for new bed

Hi All,

Apologies if this is in the wrong section...

Recently moved into a new house and starting to tackle the garden. I made a new bed at the weekend (see pics below) and wanted to get some advice as i'm a complete rookie when it comes to gardening.

Given that the area gets sun from about 9:30am until about 3pm what should I be looking to plant at this time of year? I have some carrots, beetroots, leeks and lettuce that I picked up from a local shop.

Another question I have is about the soil, I was planning on just filling it with compost but a friend suggested I might need some topsoil - will regular garden soil do?

I think most of those veg will be happy with the sunshine. If you use garden soil just make sure it isn't too stony where you sow your carrots as it could cause them to fork.
Bumping this up for the veg experts  :)
  • I would mix a bit of top soil into the compost. If you google ‘soil ratio in a new raised bed’ it will tell you. It’s quite a small bed, so be careful you don’t overcrowd it with seeds.
Also, as a newbie to growing veg, may I suggest you choose a few things that are really easy to grow and grow quite quickly, so you reap the rewards early and don’t loose enthusiasm. Leeks have a long growing period, and carrots are also quite slow before they will be ready... beetroot and lettuce is a good idea. I’d also recommend radishes, green beans, Pak Choi and rainbow Swiss chard for a newbie.
    enjoy!
