Corkscrew hazel pests

Last year the leaves on my corkscrew hazel? or iggly wiggly tree as we call it, were decimated by striped furry caterpillars. These 'eggs' have appeared in the last week, when you squash them there is yellow stuff inside. I'm thinking they might be eggs/larve for the furry caterpillars? If so what can I use to get rid of them? or is it a question of picking them off by hand? Thank you.

Those are scale insects (probably 'Brown scale') and you are doing the right thing by manually removing them.
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Can't help with identifying but as your tree doesn't look huge picking them off shouldn't be a problem much better than using insecticide.
