Crown Prince Squash - Success in Grow Bags & Training?

Hi,

I hope everyone is well during this time!

I've been thinking of trying my hand at winter squash this year and was wondering if anyone could give me some advice or share their experience with growing Crown Prince Squash.

Could they be successfully grown in grow bags/big containers or would it affect their production and fruit size if they're too compact? I have a medium sized garden and my beds are already occupied. I'm reluctant to dig into the ground beyond my existing beds, in case they fail to produce a decent crop and I end up with big holes for nothing!

Also could I train the vines to grow in a line or should I be expecting them to sprawl wide and everywhere? I know Crown Princes need a lot of room but I was hoping to train them along the 4 sides of my garden and still have some room for myself to wandering around!

I grew crown prince last year, each plant was 1m apart in the rows and rows were 1.5 meters apart, it crawled over seven meters, turning up in the beans, the corn... everywhere. BUT none of the long vines fruit managed to hit maturity so I think that you can pinch most of the vines off after each plant has set 2 fruit. equally I can't see any reason why you can't make it crawl where you want it to, you would just need to tie it to something to stop the wind moving it around. But with the size of the plants I don't think one grow bag is going to work, If you can keep them wet I would guess that two bags on top of each-other might work(or emptied into a black bag with some holes poked in it), the plants might not reach full potential but you will get something for your effort.

Thanks for the advice Skandi! I may try growing 1 or 2 vines in the ground and then another in a grow bag to see the difference!
