should I cut the tree back or not? Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

Hello -I am not too sure what to do so any help,would be appreciated! 

I would like to prune back my fir trees but the inside of the trees looks very brown/dead? If I prune them back will I lose the green leaves or will they regrow?

Any advice would be appreciated as would love to cut back the trees but unsure what it will look like?

    Most firs go dead inside and very few regrow fresh leaves. Do you know what they are?

    Hello it is a conifer and I think a Chinese Arborvitae but very new to gardening so a little unsure!

    What would you recommend I do as it is I have a row of them on the boundary with my neighbour should I cut it back and plant something under to fill the gaps or not cut it back?What would you recommend?

    Thanks to a possible spammer, this thread has bumped up,  so l would agree with Hostafan1,  if you can post a photo of the whole area it would be a great help. 
    It might be possible to tidy them up and raise the canopy slightly.
