Renovating an old garden, need ideas for a dead space!

Hello all,

This is my first post so please be gentle! We've recently bought our first house after renting for a year, and we're very pleased to have a good sized garden to play with. I'm a very keen gardener but haven't done much actual garden work due to never having my own proper garden.

When we moved in, it was very overgrown with some shrubbery, ivy and all sorts, and I think we've done a pretty good job so far. One side of the garden is taking shape, however the other side is quite challenging, mainly because I can't think of what to put there! So I have come here looking for help, inspiration and ideas :)

We're not madly into all these modern gardens I keep seeing online, despite only being 25 🤣 We quite like your more traditional, 'boring' garden as it were 🤣

My main problem with this part of the garden is that when we got started, there was a huge shrub there which over years had clearly overgrown and kind of spilled over into the lawn. It's also right next to the patio, which is really annoying! I can't think of what to put there, although my ideas so far have been to make a rock garden, spilled plant pots (if that's what you call them!) Or to make an outdoor tortoise enclosure there and start the bed further down. I'm also unsure how to make the bit next to the patio back to grass, due to the huge amount of soil there is backed up on that patch.

I'm going to attempt to upload some pictures so hopefully that goes well!

Thanks very much, I hope everybody is well and staying safe.

I'm going to suggest another shrub or climber as I think you need something taller and bolder. I would also keep the shape of the bed as it makes the garden look more interesting, but you might like to cut a decent lawn edge, take the weeds out. and just rake it all until it's more level. That will make the space look immediately tidier. The soil doesn't look bad but if there was a shrub there before, you should dig a bag of well-rotted manure into it to give it some guts. What kind of flowers do you like and what colours? Would you want an evergreen shrub to give structure during the winter?

@treeface It's called the Hangout Pod, we got it from Homebase last year in a sale for £100, what a bargain we thought! We love it!

It's available from other places but they have their own website, which is https://www.hangoutpod.co.uk/
