planting along railings

Hi Folks,

First post here. I’m hurtling towards retirement and am just starting to take more of an interest in the garden so don’t know very much about it!

25 years ago, I planted what I thought was ‘hedge rose’ along the fence at the front of my house. After unsuccessfully trying to train the along the fence for those 25 years I finally dug them up last week. Ideas of what I can put in there now would be gratefully received. The soil is fairly dry and sandy. The fence is 6 meters in length and 60cms high. Thanks

@Oldnewgardener, hello there, welcome to the forum. I  don't have that kind of soil so suggest you look on the RHS website and search on low hedge, sandy and dry soil and see what suggestions they make.

  • Thank you for your help. I've had a look and have got a few ideas, am thinking of Lavander. Thanks again

Lavender would work well as long as it gets a decent amount of sun. If you're not dead-set on a hedge, a row of shrubby salvias would like the sandy soil (you could have different coloured flowers). Or salvias and lavender. Santolina also likes a sandy soil.

  • Not dead set on a hedge but do you think I should be looking for something evergreen? I love the idea of salvias and lavender though.
