Yellow fungus on a plum tree

A bright yellow fungus has suddenly appeared on a mature Victoria plum tree when we pruned a branch last year.  Is this symptomatic of a disease and if so, what should I do? The tree appears healthy.

Hi @arcticsky11 ... I am no expert but that looks very like the much sought after edible fungus ‘Chicken of the Woods’
    https://www.wildfooduk.com/mushroom-guide/chicken-of-the-woods/

Take a look at the video on that link.

Please don’t take my word for it ... get it checked out by a local expert before eating it.

As it has formed on a dead stump I wouldn’t be too worried about the tree ... it is not in thee weed interest of most fungi to kill their host, and Chicken of the Woods is known for reappearing on the same tree year after year, suggesting that the host tree tolerated it well.

I would love to have a Chicken of the Woods (if I’m correct in my ID) in my garden. 😊

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Thank you Dovefromabove, that's very reassuring, thanks!  Apart from the potential bonus of being edible, it's also very colourful :)
