Iron bowl planter thingy

LoxleyLoxley Posts: 5,698
Someone was giving away this old iron bowl, I had to have it. I was going to use it as a water feature but there's a crack halfway up.

I could use it as a planter for cannas, and let them sit in water. Any other ideas folks? And what is it?

I like the thread title.... ;)
Can you drill holes in the base? Otherwise, you'd have to put something else inside, and keep checking for waterlogging. I do that with my Dad's old pot he used for stripping  lacquer from brass instruments - it has no holes, and I'm worried that I'd damage it if I'm too forceful.

I wonder if it's from an old heating system, or a brewery?

There must be hairline cracks on the bottom as well, it does eventually dry up completely. One of my big cannas should like it in there, although I wonder if one of the more compact Eupatoriums (e.g. Little Joe) would work? I love Eupatoriums :)

Well you'll have to ask nicely.... ;)

I'd have thought there would be an 'attachment' of some kind underneath if it had been a bell @Lyn
Perhaps @WillDB could turn it over and have a gander...

It's obviously had more to it at some point , because of the rough edges

I know Ive seen one just like that before ...I’m wracking my brains .... something lurking in the back of my mind keeps saying it’s for water at a smithy for the smith to plunge the hot horseshoes etc into to cool quickly.
I may be imagining it ... but in the absence of anything else it’s a nice notion ...

I'm sure I've seen similar objects lying about and at salvage yards. These are listed as "pair of 19th C Cast Iron Coppers" on eBay

    Look similar.

They do @WillDB. They're very smart, and would look good with a couple of standard hollies or bays or something.
They'd be nice with virtually anything really  :)

Whatever it was, I’d try and take the rest of it’s rim off, that pointed bit on the right looks lethal.
