My guess would be that the passiflora is too leafy and is shading the rose out, which likes sunshine to flower well, so maybe not good companions. Might it be possible to train the passiflora in one direction and the rose in another?
Thanks all. The passion flower is very mature and is particularly hard to control - I go to work, come back and it has grown by a foot with little tentacles coming out and wrapping themselves around everything.
I'll just let the rose bloom and come back with some pics.
As I say, it's the first time in years that I've seen flower buds forming on it (or them, hard to tell how many plants as I follow to the ground and there just seems to be cluster of fused woodiness with stems shooting out from a wide area) ...
These parts of the picture are rose flowers with 100% certainty... the top part, I am not sure.
I think I have the same ID guess as Marlorena (if I guess correctly what her guess is )... but let's wait for the confirmation of the flowers.
@jamesharcourt I asked for the picture from distance to be sure there are no suckers but I don't see any. You have a nice rose there. I would try to train some of the new canes on the fence but I see it can be tricky to do. The passion flower also doesn't help, they are very vigorous, I used to have one and you can almost see it grow.
Hi @Marlorena I have a better picture of the rose flower now as the first buds opened in the last couple of days. Also some fairly long shoots have emerged and I haven't touched them ... pics below.
@jamesharcourt ...thank you James... just what I wanted.... your rose is 'American Pillar'.. quite often seen and the blooms are about to open on this rose all over the country where it grows..
...if you've heard of Vita Sackville-West, previous owner of the renowned Sissinghurst Gardens... you might be interested to know that, in her words ''I hate, hate, hate American Pillar'... I think she wanted it vanquished from the country.. lol..
..I have to say, it's not a favourite of mine either.... but yours will look just great for a few weeks.. it's very popular in coastal areas, one often sees it in Cornish cottage gardens by the sea...
