Yew hedge issue

Hi,

These yew's were planted in approx. September 2016 as root balls about 3/4ft tall.  They have grown in height, but don't seem to have thickened out into the hedge I was hoping they would.
They had a mulching when planted.  I have not fed them, and as advised when planted I have not trimmed them or cut them at all.
I want them to reach a uniform 6ft, which some of them are approaching.

What should I do to encourage them to thicken out into a hedge?

I have attached some photo's. Thank you in advance!

It’s a regular trimming which helps hedges to thicken.

Thank you Butterfly66 - I’ll take a look and get trimming!

    Thank you.

And they'll do better if you keep the area around them clear of weeds and grass (less competition).  The mulch is probably overdue for refreshing!

With yew trim the sides, never the tops until desired height. Trim the tops and you'll practically stop it dead in its tracks and it will put no more than an inch or so on top each year.

Yew is slooooow. It takes time but eventually, in my mind at least, it is one of the best if not the very best evergreen hedge.
