@Cumbriman Alchemilla is not really invasive, though if happy it gradually spreads to cover a good area and you will find seedlings popping up in odd spaces, but not en masse. You can chop a bit off if it spreads a bit too far, it doesn't seem to mind. It goes well with other plants and will mingle without being thuggish. With rich soil its leaves will grow larger and taller than they are likely to do for you, so you should have nothing to worry about.
@Treeface Astilbe is gorgeous; may look at some of them along the wall. Combined with the existing blossom tree and an Acer where the conifer currently is that could look nice, perhaps put a membrane down with fine gravel for a Japanese type feel.
I've only had the heuchera's (pictured) a few week so too soon to divide.
Well I've made a start on preparing the area and, I have to say the soil was better than I thought (though there are a few roots). I've removed everything but a cared two hostas [one of which is surprisingly healthy), a hydrangea (cut back to improve shape next year), some ferns and ivy.
Just need to add some organic matter in now.
I've added a new pictures which does the area more justice; I've also raised the canopy if the bushes a smidge.
Well, hopefully this won't come back to bite me but I've improved the soil and added Hosta, ferns and vinca minor Ralph shugart into the area. I have some copper mesh and beer traps on order to keep the slugs at bay and have some plum slate for the area in front. Now I just have to keep the soil healthy. Looks promising though 🤞
