Am I too late?

EmmaMEmmaM Posts: 16
I ordered some veg seeds weeks and weeks ago but they still haven't arrived.  I'm new to this but thought it would be good to get some veg in the little greenhouse, some pots and maybe a raised bed to keep me and my son entertained (and fed!)

Is it going to all be too late if they arrive in the next couple of weeks or is it still worth planting them?

I think I ordered carrots, courgette, spring onions and cucumbers.

Also, what is the best mix of compost and top soil for the pots?

Carrots, spring onions and courgettes will be fine sown now. It might be a bit late for cucumbers, especially if you're going to be growing them outside. I've had success with greenhouse cucumbers sown in May but don't grow them outdoors.

I use multipurpose compost for all these except carrots which I've only grown in the ground so I'm not sure what you would need in conatiners.

I never had any luck growing carrots in the ground, in my clay soil they don't even germinate.  Last year I managed to grow some in pots, in a 50:50 mix of garden soil and coir.

I also have very clay soil. Can’t even dig it at the moment, it’s like concrete! Hence why I’m trying to do everything in pots and raised beds.

I have clay soil too but my vegetable garden is well worked so has more pliable soil. I do find carrot very hit and miss though. Some years they don't germinate at all but this year they have germinated well.

My first sowing germinated about two weeks ago, the second is just starting.
