Cherry laurel turning yellow and leaves falling off

In January this year we planted 40 cherry laurels to form a barrier from our house to the road. We bought them at 4/5 feet tall, they were really green and bushy. They came in hessian root balls and we planted them about 2 feet apart as we wanted an instant privacy screen.
i think I may have over watered them in the beginning and I am worried the roots are rotting. They have nearly all turned yellow, all their leaves are falling off (there is so many leaves flying everywhere!), and some have completely gone brown and crispy.
We dug the worst two up to see what was happening, the hessian bag was still intact, and the rootball was really soft and moist. It didn’t smell though, which I’ve read is a sign of root rot? We cut the bag open and fluffed the soil up a bit and re planted.
They all seem to be dying? Will they survive being over watered? The ones that have gone brown are they dead now?
Need some advice please!!

The planting space is too close for such mature shrubs to grow in. At 4-5ft tall they also grow outwards. I suggest you reduce their size by pruning at least 1/3 out. This will help reduce stress to the roots.

The borders also look too narrow for them. Not sure how you prepped the soil but heavy soils need a fair bit of time to break up and more compost added to help the structure. Personally I would unravel hessian around the roots. Gives them a head start to reach out.

The weather has been warm and watering has to increase. Look at watering a bucket into each plant directly into the roots. It’s unlikely over watering.

You have 40 cherry laurels?? 😮
    They are beasts!
The one we took out last year from our urban front garden was 3m across and 4m high (when we bought the house).
It swamped everything in its wake.

Take the dead one out, cut the others down a bit, they’ll soon fill the gap.
