Young Leeks

I have never grown leeks before and I have a number of them in mid-size pots, however they don't appear to be getting any larger (the green part) they are about 6 weeks old now and only 7 cm tall, should I be worried?

Mine are about the same, but they always seem a bit slow to wake up.  I'd make sure they've got some chicken manure (real stuff or pellets) around them, i.e. their favourite nutrition, and sit and wait.  Once they're 12-13 inches tall, dib 12 inch holes where you want them to grow on, drop a few pellets into each, and gently tease the saplings down as far as they'll go.  That'll ensure you get a decent white section at cropping stage.

Anything belonging to the onion family take ages to come to fruition.  I am sure you will enjoy a nice leek and blue stilton tart this winter!!!
A good hoeing is worth two waterings.

  • Both my onions did this...
Onions started inside in Feb... planted out and nothing for ages until last week!
