Viburnum failed to come into leaf

We purchased a viburnum (not sure of the variety but it has a layered branch effect) and for 3 years it has grown with a healthy appearance and fine leaves and flowers.  This spring it has failed to come into leaf.  There are a few vertical stems coming off the lower branches which have rooted and these are in leaf and which recently I cut off from the main plant.  Can the plant be saved as it appears very poorly at present?  Any advice would be appreciated.  John in Cornwall.

  • Sorry John can’t seem to get the photo up. But after saying that I don’t really know much about trees, but it will bring it to the top for you. Valerie

viburnham should be in leaf really and in cornwall probably quite some time ago.

    probably viburnham roseum?

have you had a really close look for buds, as most plants start breaking buds months before leaves come out.  some close up photography is likely to garner you the best help in the forum.

great news you have some layered cuttings from it.

hopefully someone here will have some ideas for you.

if nobody here has better idea ( they will!) then it might be as well to dig it up and look at the roots....are they in good health/rotten? and go from there.
  • Thanks.  It seems to have started to bud but then died.

Have you scraped the bark with your fingernail? If it's not green then it's probably dead. It looks rather dead.
Would help to know the exact variety. Mine are both evergreen so I'm not sure if this is normal.
