Can you identify this tree please?

I have a tree in my garden that my neighbour has kindly trespassed on my property and cut down! It used to be a favourite for wildlife, birds ate the berries, nested in it and squirrels also loved it.
I don’t think it is a protected species but would like to know what it is/was! It has thorns all over the branches.

Why on earth did your neighbour come and cut it down? I'd be onto the police if it were mine.
