Weed ID

A nasty weed with rhizome type roots has invaded my strawberry patch - I think in a bag of compost I used for mulching. I cannot identify it. It looks somewhat like bindweed but with more rounded leaves and thicker white roots and in 5 weeks since I mulched it has put on roots going down more than 30 cm. Does anyone know what it is? I have dug as much out as I can without destroying the patch but I’m sure it’ll be back. I don’t want to use weed killer as I grow tomatoes but I will as a last resort if deemed necessary!!! I would add a picture but that button doesn’t work.
