Clematis and manure

a supplier of clematis says don’t use manure when planting clematis. Unfortunately, I have only just read it - after the event.  Should I take the clematis out and start again, which would be a big job or could I risk it. Valerie

    Hi
I don’t think they have given you the correct information imo
If you have added well rotted farm yard manure that has been supplied by a recognised brand then the Clematis would thank you if it could
I would have mixed the manure with 50% of the dug out soil and if you have any manure left then apply this as a mulch to the base of the plant

  • @Stevedaylily, thanks for that, do you consider well rotted cow manure suitable. Valerie

    Hi Valerie,

Yes, no problems just mix it 50/50 with the top soil

I wonder if they're saying that to avoid the possibility that people will dump a load of fresh manure onto a young clematis, with the inevitable result.

Well rotted manure should be fine for most clematis, assuming the hole is well prepped anyway, and it isn't a tiny plant.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • @Stevedaylilly @FairygirlThank you, it’s very well rotted and I put it in the bottom of the hole. Cheers Valerie
