Wet soil in the shade - HELP

Hi All

I've searched through lots of previous posts but couldn't find anything relating to my particular problem.
A large part of our back garden is on a 45° slope so a lot of water run off makes it's way to the section of the stones shown in the photos. The soil is usually wet even after a few weeks of no rain there, the area is also in partial shade as shown but is south facing.
We want to make more use of this area by laying grass and native plants but arent sure if the wet shady area would be a poor growing condition. Before I spend hundreds of pounds on an experiment that might not work, would:
Adding compost as well as new top soil improve the over all quality for grass to grow once the stones are cleared?
Would I be better putting down a section of artificial grass?
What sort of pretty shrubs/ornamental grasses/ferns work best in these conditions?
Is there any tall slim profiled plants that would grow best to offer a screen for the fence on the left hand side.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Hydrangeas would be well suited, especially paniculata and quercifolia types.
Shade tolerant grasses could include Luzula nivea, Hakonechloa macra, Milium effusum 'Bowles Gold'... and there are plenty more that tolerate part/dappled shade.
So many fern options, Dryopteris affinis, Polystichum setiferum, Polypodium vugare…. just for a start!

Could be a seriously nice area...

Hydrangeas did come to mind as a few neighbours have them, possibly in the corner under the tree...though there is a large tree root there!
