Courgette / zucchini plant with split stem

I have a young courgette plant which has a split stem. Is it finished?! This is my first time growing these from seed, I know I have started them a bit early but I've been keeping them in the shed overnight and outdoors during the day. They have been quite leggy and I've had to plant them quite deep so I'm wondering if this might be the problem. Any insight much appreciated...

The stems are prone to damage if they are rubbed or rasped by slugs or just outdoors on a windy day. Once they are weakened they do sometimes give way I believe.

I haven't had this problem with courgettes but with a tomato I just splinted it with a couple of kebab sticks and some raffia, worked fine and plant carried on producing tomatoes.

Worth a try? Someone might help with a better explanation and solution as I am definitely no expert  :)
