A neighbour gave me one and from the web I have found out they grow to at least 6 foot tall.

? Will it grow at low level or is it imperative to have a support system.

They are a cordon growing variety, they will grow taller than 6ft if you let them. I just use one cane for support.

You could pinch out the top after the 2nd or 3rd flower truss if you don’t want it getting too tall. And could let one or two side shoots grow to a similar height to get a decent amount of toms. Would still probably need a small bamboo cane or 2 for support.
Or you can just let it grow unsupported and not pinch out sides shoots. It will form a tangled messy bush. You’d still get some toms but takes up a lot of space.

I take out the top after five trusses of flowers and get a very decent crop, I also regularly take out the side shoots

I grow them outside and do exactly the same.

I do much the same with my cherry tomatoes grown outside, but I stop them when they get to the top of the 6ft canes. That's usually about 6 trusses. I've grown sungold for the first time this year so they will get the same treatment.

I do the same, but was making suggestions to keep them at a low level as per the OPs question.

If it's height that's the problem you can train them along a wire as well, just tie the tip down to a wire/string each time it tries to grow up
