Advice re growing mangetout up a wall with horizontal wires and a kiwi vine

Hi all, first time posting so be kind to me please

I have recently planted a kiwi vine to train up a South West facing stone wall (approx 8ft by 8ft), with horizontal wires at the correct intervals.

I am wondering whether I can grow mangetout in the space around this, without crowding the vine or utilising too many nutrients in the soil?

Also, if I do plant the mangetout, should I erect some vertical hazel posts, or will the mangetout find its way up using the horizontal wires?

Thanks!

Hi @lianeandryan - I know nothing about kiwis I'm afraid - I doubt they could survive round here, but mange tout need a fair bit of watering, so I'm not sure it would be a good idea. They need to be planted well away from the wall too, as the footings can make the soil very dry there. I expect that would suit the kiwi though.

Mange tout will grow in pots though, with canes and string for support, or in a border using the same method  :)
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks. I think I'll pop them in another veg bed instead  :)

I don’t see why not. I think Kiwi need a decent amount of water in summer too and it might like the nitrogen the peas will add to the soil. You could attach some pea netting to the horizontal wires or hazel like you said, then remove it once the kiwi gets bigger and starts to fill the space.
  • Great point re nitrogen and netting, hadn't thought about that. The kiwi is on a mound, and a slight slope so I don't think the roots would get too wet from watering the peas. But maybe I can plant them a sufficient distance from the kiwi so I'm not watering too often directly around its roots
