ANOTHER Turf Question

Afternoon,

I did scroll through previous topics to find the answers i was looking for but no joy. Not sure if I've listed this in the correct area though...

Looking to re-turf a small area outside the front of my house. It was a mess, bald, unlevel, etc. I began digging out yesterday (I've dug out to approx 70mm below m path) and was going to dispose of the existing pile of mud into a skip and re-new with a sharp sand / top soil mix.

However, please see my questions below:
  • Can i 'clean' the existing mud by sifting out the lumps, stones, weeds etc compact and level and lay existing turf on top?
  • Or will i need to do a mix of both? if so whats the best ratio and would i need to mix the 2 together or will the new go on top if the old or visa/versa?
  • I would like the new grass to be as level as possible with the path, do i need to leave the level of the new soil a certain measure below the bath to allow for the turf to get this bang on?
  • Lastly, if someone would be so kind to give me a brief breakdown of the steps i need to take that would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
